On Failure and Success

On Failure and Success

I am in the process of looking for a new role. Yesterday, during an interview, I was asked the ever popular question, “Describe a time you failed.” Let me put this out there – I don’t do failure.

What exactly does that mean? “I don’t do failure?” It’s a philosophy on life and on business for me. Failure is a trigger word for many and indicates that a person has, in some way, failed to achieve a goal or has not succeeded at something.

Success Is…

This bears asking, “What is success?” For me, success is more than achieving a goal. Achieving a goal is great, but did you learn anything from it? For me, that is success – continuing to grow and learn throughout your entire life. I define success as being happy, doing what I love, and moving toward enlightenment and wisdom. As long as I continue to do that, I can not fail. I can make mistakes – but not fail.

Failure or Success?

In business, every campaign, program, or project should be a learning experience. I am not a “set it and forget it” person. If a campaign is doing well, it can do better. If a campaign is performing poorly, it can do well. “Optimization” is a watchword for me. So is “calculated risk.” Note outcomes, document processes, and move on.

In my personal life, every significant interaction with another person, or every interaction I see between people, has the opportunity to be a learning experience. Could I have phrased something better? Could I have been more understanding? Did I truly empathize or put aside judgement?

In business, I’m a researcher and a learner with an analytical mindset who believes in pilot programs and testing and I apply those in every business undertaking. That doesn’t mean I don’t make mistakes, but it does mean they are generally not catastrophic. It means I make small mistakes on my way to huge successes.

If I believed in failure, every interaction that didn’t go my way could be considered a failure. Every campaign that started out poorly could be considered a failure. Every job interview where I don’t get the job could be considered a failure. Every martial arts tournament I didn’t win or dog show I don’t win could be considered failures – but I don’t see them that way. I see them as experiences from which to learn so I can improve the next time.

My belief that I am capable of anything leads me to not believe in failure. That is an asset to any undertaking. We’re born to succeed. It is others who see our shortcomings and point them out to us as failures
